No.23 comment/feedback

I made it! and i have done the survey.
after all the frustrations and joys, doing this training is good fun. and it has become a routine topic at our tea break. at some stage, it is our obsession.
u know why I've been working so hard to finish this? because i have started.
good to experience so many different sites and functions, we can't remember all of them, but they will be somewhere in our memory.

No.22 NetLibrary

i have my library card number and password, easy to log into the netlibrary, after a keyword searching for rotavirus, i located a relevant book called 'The Mother of All Parenting Books: The Ultimate Guide to Raising a Happy, Healthy Child From Preschool Through the Preteens', it contains 3 pages talking about the virus, i can go and view the page and also can email the page. i can add it to my favourites after i opened another account for the net library.
http://0-www.netlibrary.com.www.elgar.govt.nz/Reader/
i pasted the title under our library's general search page, it shows the title as an ebook.
i think we can show some interested customer how it works and maybe they can read the screen(not the books) all day and print the pages the want. does that count as our issues?
i think we've been to the elibrary before when it was first introduced several years ago, i even borrowed one for 24 hours.

No. 21 podcasts

No.20 YouTube & other sites

Hi, Utube again. we've been there on reference training together a few months ago. because it's so popular in our young customers, we have to know something about it.

today, i see it again, and view several videos. i don't like the 70s ads, i quite like this one, only because it's name : rock n roll library, i can see familiar but different library settings.

i wonder, maybe we can put our blogging (learning and struggling) videos on YouTube, so the whole world will know what we're doing.

the biggest thing i hate was, the jerky pictures and music stopping all the time, i am not impatient, but i find it really annoying.

No.19 discovering web 2.0 tools

i did some tour on http://www.medstory.com/ ,as this is of my interests, i typed the word 'rota virus' , it gave me about 318,000 hits, all about rotavirus, by clicking the links, i can go to different sites, some sites allowed me to add my comment, i think a lot of stories of people's experience can be shared by that way. it also got email, u can email the whole article to anyone asking the question.
i also had a look into http://www.revolutionhealth.com/, this is like a site for latest health news.
i just have no time to explore further.
how people find them? or just by links?

No. 18 zoho writer

oh, i've got into the 'zoho writer', click different buttons to go to it's different functions. i even sign up a new account, i then have my new wiki home page, http://lihao.wiki.zoho.com/

isn't that fun? i changed its colour from default to paddy, i even add a link to it, i know a lot of things can be changed of added, just feel a sudden power of freedom of expression in the online world.

as it's not very complicated, i can be a wiki writer once i retire.

No. 17 SandBox Wiki

hey, can't see the video, takes ages to download and see nothing!
oh, yes, i can see i am able to edit pages, see http://sandboxwikidogs.pbwiki.com/yes%21
and you can see my blog on the bottom of the favourite blog list, http://acllearn.pbwiki.com/Favourite+blogs
is that all for this step?
i now know we cand edit wiki, quite simple

No.17 PBWiki

hey, my blog is on the bottom of the list. can u see it?
easy to add, just copy & paste
http://acllearn.pbwiki.com/Favourite-blogs
but who's going to see it?

No.16 Wiki

some says, Wikis are a great way of collaboratively developing a website, but they are not suitable for every web-based project. While some websites might benefit from the insights of the community, others function better under tighter control. If you are looking to develop content that requires input from people outside of the library, a wiki is a the ideal tool to solicit that content.

I found wikis are a very useful informal tool, i have used it to explain quite a few puzzles already, such as slang.

there was once i couldn't sit in front of TV for the last 20 minutes of the last episode of my favourite soaps, guess what, I got it all from Wiki the following week! other sites can't do such detailed description.

it sounds like a free forum for all. but the school teachers don't advise their pupils to go to wiki, as it is too informal, it may give u wrong info.

No.15 library 2.0 and future

I went to those links, all of them, read them quickly, agree what they say about future generation, future library, etc. I also watched the video, though it stopped all the time, and I never managed to view from beginning to end, but I got its meaning : e is better than paper!

I agree, in many ways, but not all.

when i was in uni 20 yrs ago, a lot of talking about future world was already there, I still remember those very advanced ideas, something like we're going to live in a paperless world. so many years later, people still talk the same topic.

too much

talking about user training in the 2nd newsletter, i think we are training each other, discover more and more through seaching and learning.

No.14 Technorati

why it takes so long to open the page when searching under 'tags'?
the other 2 are fine: I got 10309 results under 'blog posts' and 828 under 'blog directory',
are these the difference? so far, i don't quite get the sense of technorati, who want to search all those blogs? why? is offical info not enough? why people want to see other's comments?
i have been to the 'popular blogs' sites, all directing me to 'boing boing' etc., yes, click those links, but none of them seems interesting to me. sorry.

stamp 13. del.icio.us & tag

Hi, I've been there again!

yes, i've also registered an account, with my work email ofcourse. during the process, i found it is installing, just doubt something will automatically disappear next day.

I now know I can make any page I like as my bookmarklets, but too many means none. we need only a few, don't we?

the other thing, this is a slow page, maybe I am not lucky, but I haven't got the verification email after 20 minutes.

although it is easy to add your instructed page as my bookmark, and it is interesting to see other people using the same page, see what they are searching.

anyway, i probably won't use it for now, but good to know it is there, and it is called del.icio.us.

about stamp No.11 librarything

you haven't read my blog about that, as there was 0 comment.
I have already done it 2 blogs before.

you just read my blog after that, as I want to tell you that it only works when you log on at least 1 of all those windows.

I have test it 3 times on mine, and 3 times on my colleagues'. we are exactly the same!
I don't see it as a problem, it is just an interesting observation. anyway, how come it is so easy for other people to get into your own 'library'?

just paste here again for you to view.
cheers

Rollyo-- stamp No.12

http://rollyo.com/index.html
I have registered again!
I did a health search, searched everything about allergy, on all the health sites, and it works.
I will test to see if it work under public log-ons.
it is another tool for reference, maybe I will recommend it to customers if I still remember the site address. it is more specified than the general search engine.

about librarything

hi, i have tried those links, they only work when i signed in, you can see my 5 books! but they don't work otherwise, so others can't see my library. is it for security reasons? if you want to see my library, feel free to ask for my password. log on name is 'lihao'

stamp 10

look! I made it!

with a lot of help from my colleague of course.

so I can make much more exciting stuff.
you know what, we are talking nothing but blogging at our tea time. but the problem is, very few people seem to have time to finish all those steps before the deadline. as most of us only working parttime, and have all sorts of pal duties to do with no delays. at home, i am even busier!
anyway, fun to do, and nice to have a new topic in common.

news feeds--stamp No.9

I have visited those sites you recommend, I even prescribed some, Boing Boing sent me all the good stuff almost everyday for 2 weeks, I've just deleted all of them and won't subscribe anymore as I found them not as relevent/current as nzherald. I don't have time to read those stuff, Herald is more interesting. actually, after you introduced RSS and its logo, I started to see it everywhere, I can go to my favourite sites to order news.
BUT, I still enjoy reading the newspaper with a cup of milo, while sitting in front of the screen, I can do nothing but READ.

mashup-my 6th stamp

I've looked into mashups, how it works, what it can make, some successful examples, and what it means (wikipedia). I now know people can use those programmes provided to mix image, sound, calenda...everything they want, together, to design something new to share with friends or just show strangers how clever he/she is! all we need is just time! I have tried, but not cool at all!
(we Epsom blogging staff are all using gmail address, only I use the work address, that's the only difference i can see.)
